Statement by Genevieve Malouin-Diraddo on the Trans-Pacific Partnership
I oppose the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and would move to block the agreement in Parliament if elected.
Throughout this campaign there were many promises by the Conservatives that they would defend Supply Management, however, based on the preliminary details of the TPP, it appears they have not kept that promise.
The Canadian Government has silently acknowledged that the TPP will hurt the dairy industry. By offering $4.3 billion in income support for producers in the dairy and poultry sectors, they acknowledge that the TPP deal will hurt Supply Management, and by offering a phased-out income protection program for 15 years, they are attempting to buy-off producers with short-term support.
The TPP also contains provisions that allow foreign corporations to sue Canada in private arbitrations if they feel our laws are bad for their profits. This is a serious threat to Canada’s sovereignty. We must not allow foreign interests the ability to dictate our laws.
If elected, I would vote NO to the TPP when it passes before Parliament after the October 19th election.
